Project Location: Tunbridge Wells, Kent
Client Brief: Having recently moved from South Africa, our clients commissioned KMGD to give their treasured sculptures a new home and more importantly, help connect them to their urban garden in Tunbridge Wells. The large, bland expanse of lawn, with very little to inspire, has transformed reflecting an “art gallery” vibe. Destination areas were incorporated throughout to provide various spaces in which the clients can enjoy the garden, offering a variety of vantage points to appreciate their sculptures and luscious, textural planting. Pathways and stepping stones link all areas of the garden, seamlessly uniting and navigating the outdoors with the house. A strong line of sight creates a beautiful vista through the garden where a signature sculpture has been carefully placed to draw toward the cocooned, cosy, intimate fire pit area. The clients’ passion for cooking has been enhanced with an outdoor kitchen - a bespoke design unique to our client with rustic yet industrial material finishes. Their love of food, wine and entertaining has been encouraged so that they further connect with an alfresco lifestyle. Inspiration for the design was taken by referencing the sculptures by Cobus Haupt, existing ceramic pots and the earthy interiors palette. The planting palette was informed by the colours and textures from their precious artwork by Bonnie Walters.
This garden has transformed the way our clients use their outdoor space and, in their words, has added a ‘rockstar’ finish to their once unloved garden.
This BALI award-winning garden is truly an extension of the clients’ home, reflecting their character, taste and immaculate style.
